If you are wondering what happens at the dentist, they will begin the checkup by examining each of your teeth and your mouth to detect any injured tooth, toothache, decay, plaque, tartar, cavities, or gum disease. They will also perform a physical exam to check your tongue, throat, face and neck. They rely on a digital X-ray, as a diagnostic tool, to examine below the surface and determine if there is an infection present and the condition of existing dental fillings, crowns, root canals or bridges. The X-ray is included in the $99 treatment price.

After the comprehensive assessment, they will start the dental cleaning procedure with what is known as scaling, where dentists remove plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth and around the gum line. Then, they will continue with the polishing to make the tooth surface smooth, which includes a deeper cleaning of the teeth and brushing the teeth with a high-powered electric brush to remove the remaining tartar and bacteria. And finally, they will use fluoride to protect your teeth against cavities and strengthen the surface of your teeth.

Is teeth cleaning necessary for your dental health?

Dental plaque is a sticky film that results from the combination of bacteria from the mouth with saliva, food particles and dead cells. When it accumulates, it causes tooth decay and can damage the surface of the tooth. If it is not removed, it will harden into tartar (also called calculus), which will form below and above the gum line. As it contains bacteria, it can irritate the gums and cause gingivitis (bleeding gums). If left untreated, it can result in gum disease (periodontitis), a much more severe condition that leads to the loss of the supporting bone around the teeth and loose teeth. 

Holes or cavities can also develop and progress until they reach the nerve. If this happens, you would need a root canal or worse, tooth extraction and/or dental surgery.

Even with good dental care habits, you cannot completely eliminate tartar. Dentists have cleaning tools to remove it from difficult areas, such as between the teeth and below the gum line. For this reason, you should visit the dentist every six months for a regular dental checkup and professional dental cleaning.
